4.Rajnath Singh inaugurates ‘smart’ border fencing pilot projects

5. Second Nepal-China joint military drill in September:

  • The drill, ‘Sagarmatha Friendship-2’, will be held at Chengdu, the capital of China’s southwestern Sichuan Province.

  • The Nepal Army, which has long been holding joint military exercises with India and the United States, has collaborated with the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), extending military diplomacy, Kathmandu Post reported.

  • The first edition of the exercise was held in April last year in Nepal’s Maharajgunj.

  • Nepal has been conducting battalion-level exercises named ‘Surya Kiran’ with the Indian Army for the last 13 years, engaging some 300 personnel from both sides.

4.NASA launches satellite to track decreasing polar ice

  • NASA launched its Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite-2, known as ICESat-2, which will use an extremely precise laser to collect measurement data to track the Earth’s shrinking polar ice, on Saturday (September 15) from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California

  • The satellite’s orbit will take 91 days before repeating, allowing the device to measure the same locations four times a year, so scientists can see how they change over seasons

2.WPI inflation drops to four-month low of 4.53%

  • Deflation in vegetables was 20.18 per cent in August, as against 14.07 per cent in the previous month.

  • Inflation in the ‘fuel and power’ basket was 17.73 per cent in August as prices of domestic fuel increased, in line with high global crude oil rates and a depreciating rupee.

  • Wholesale Price Index (WPI)-based inflation in August eased to a four-month low of 4.53 per cent on softening of food prices.

4.Govt steps in to shore up rupee, curb current account deficit

  • PM Modi on Friday met with finance minister Arun Jaitley, RBI governor Urjit Patel and several top policy-makers to take stock of the economic situation.

6.RBI to buy G-Secs in open market on Sept 19

  • The RBI on Friday said it will purchase Government Securities (G-Secs) under Open Market Operations (OMO) for ₹10,000 crore on September 19.

  • The move is based on the central bank’s assessment of prevailing liquidity conditions and the durable liquidity needs going forward.

  • The central bank said it will conduct the OMO through a multi-security auction — of five G-Secs (maturing in 2020, 2022, 2027, 2030, and 2042) using the multiple price method (each bidder would get the allotment at the price he/ she has bid).

3.Indo-US joint military drill in Uttarakhand from September 16

  • As part of the ongoing Indo-US defence cooperation, a joint military training exercise “Yudh Abhyas 2018” will be conducted in the foothills of the Himalayas in Uttarakhand’s Chaubattia from September 16-29, a spokesman of the Central Command said on Monday.

  • This will be the 14th edition of the joint military exercise hosted alternately by both the countries.

  • Apsara, the first research reactor in Asia that worked nearly five decades before shutting down in 2009, is now operational as ‘Apsara-U’ on Trombay campus of Maharashtra, said Department of Atomic Energy

  • “Nearly 62 years after Apsara came into existence, a swimming pool type research reactor “Apsara-upgraded”, of higher capacity was born at Trombay

5.Piyush Goyal launches ‘Rail Sahyog’

  • Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday launched a web portal ‘Rail Sahyog’, a platform for the corporates and PSUs (Public Sector Undertakings) to contribute to the creation of amenities at Railway stations through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds.

  • The Haryana government on signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) to set up an ethanol plant in Panipat with an outlay of over Rs 900 Crore

  • The MoU was signed by Director, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department of Haryana, Dusmanta K Behera and Chief General Manager, Alternate Energy and Sustainable Development, IOC Ltd Sanjay Kumar Srivastav. The pact will be valid for one year.

  • The initiative at village Bohali with a proposed capacity of 100 kilolitres of ethanol per day will manage crop residue and prevent straw burning before the upcoming paddy season

The awardees will receive their awards from the President of India at a specially organized function at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on 25th September, 2018.

Arjuna, Dronacharya and Dhyan Chand Awardees will receive statuettes, certificates and cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh each. Overall top performing university in inter-university tournaments will be given MAKA Trophy, award money of Rs. 10 lakh and certificate
